Freshman Dorm Linda A Cooney 9780061060007 Books Reviews
These books came out when i was about 17. the material is PG 13 and its pretty fun stuff to read. Once you start, you can't put these books down. I got up to the 4th book by the time they were no longer running in publication, but my friend said she has them all. So next time i go to her house, i am definetly going to grab some. hehe.. If your girls love to read, grab these as well. Maybe give them to them around age 14 or so. Good stuff!
This book starts out really boring and cliche, so I initially thought I wasn't going to like it. But then it got interesting when dealing with relationships and sorority rush. The scenes with Winnie and the toga party and Josh were fun and funny. The book eventually turned into a gripping page turner. However, the part where the sorority plays that trick on Lauren is silly. The book made a big deal out of nothing. I really didn't think that situation was as embarassing as the book made it out to be. If I was Lauren or KC, I wouldn't have made a big deal out of it and would have gone on with life. The book also portrays sororities sort of unrealistically and makes them look bad. The scene toward the end at The Beanery offers a fun surprise, though. However, it seems that KC getting fired was a stretch from reality. This book could have been a lot better, but parts of it were good. There are few books out there about college life, so someone interested in reading about college may want to look into it.
Unlike 90210, Saved by the Bell and lots of other college dramas that portrayed college as a prolonged and wild party, this series actually showed students studying on a regular basis, and the unglamorous life of researching and typing up papers.
Sure they have dates, but they also have realistic fears and insecurities about the world. From the tone of the writing, it is obvious the author actually knows what it is like to be a modern woman attending a college and this greatly helps her audience connection. She might not have all the answers, but her prose is so honest and straightforward.
Anybody who wants to know what they are in for during the first year of college from a litterary point of view needs to read and reread every one of these books in the series before packing up and heading to the dorms. Later on, I can guarantee you will look back at both the books and your own freshman year and marvel about your awesome "anti-stress series".
Building on the "alternative" style that was popular during the series run (early 1990's) the school is located in the pacific northwest and really artsy and "grungy" people have lots of paragraph time and detail lavished on them. Although there are well heeled sorority people, this book is not built around them.
I read this series in middle school and decades later I still love it! Memories!
