Wow!! I adored this book. I couldn't get enough of the hot, dashing, kind, yet emotionally scarred Ian (who we met in the first of the 2 book series) and Alanna: beautiful, fiesty, smart & loyal. Their love story unfolded beautifully, magically. Both the heroine and hero, in their own way, are trying to save a beloved estate, and a way of life. The intimate scenes are hot! (As usual in Ms. Dodd's books.) One of the many things I love about Ms. Dodd's books, including this one, is the detailed way she develops peripheral characters. You can see them. You know them. Her descriptions of Fionnaway Manor and the estate grounds brings you right there. This book is sprinkled with wit. There's an element of mystical magic that is woven throughout this book which is fitting for the Scottish setting. This book is not a cookie cutter romance novel. Just a fantastic ride. I'm sorry it had to end! Did I mention I love this book?

I have read and loved Christina Dodd's books for years, however this one escaped my notice until now. In my opinion this is one of her best. For me, The most enjoyable stories are those that weave history, lore and imagination to create a engrossing story.
This is a dark and magical fairy tale of a romance set on the lonely Scottish coast where an old family has an ancient agreement with the selkies for protection and wealth. The Lady Alanna is the heir to Fionnaway Manor, but unwise choices by her parents have left her and the family traditions in the hands of the evil Leslie Fairchild. Alanna is forced to go into hiding when he tries to rape and marry her to gain her lands. But now Leslie Fairchild is dying and Alanna hopes to return. Only Fairchild's son, Ian, has returned, hoping to succeed his father. Alanna's first meeting with Ian occurs when she attempts to kill him one night.

Ian has had to become a self-made man, as his nasty father has mistreated or neglected him all his life. He longs for a place, a home, and thinks he's found it at Fionnaway. He's got magic in his blood that is very much a part of Fionnaway. However, the Lady Alanna, not his father, is the true heir. Ian is not as bad as his father, but he still plots to marry Alanna to secure his place.

There is some questionable consent involved with his attempts to seduce her, be warned. Alanna and Ian do fall in love, despite numerous obstacles, but their path is full of evil and dangers.

The characters are very complex and many show flaws, even if they aren't as outright nasty as Ian's father. With what Ian had to deal with in his past, he may be excused a little for his actions, but they still interfered with my sympathy towards him a little. I'm not sure if I entirely liked Alanna, although she seemed more steady and assured later on in the book. If you like your fairy tales on the troubled and dark side, this one may be for you.
Love the story. Always love reading, Christina Dodd's work, but there are some words or grammar issues that need some review. It becomes distracting when you are in the middle of a scene and all of a sudden come up to a word that doesn't even fit in the sentence because it is spelled correctly, but it's not the word meant for the sentence. (Spell check is only so good!)
No, this won't stop me from reading her books in the future, just wish there were more authors that had someone read their books the way they should be read when they go to editing.

I liked "A Well Pleasured Lady" but didn't love it. Still, it was good enough for me to read its sequel, "A Well Favored Gentleman". I loved this story and consider it the best of Dodd's novels. An excellent interweaving of myth and romance!

I really enjoyed the fact that Ian wasn't your typical 'handsome but dissolute Regency rake'. It was even better that his secret was so realistically a deal-breaker - despite the enthusiastic fantasy of "alien romance" novels, the truth is most people fear what they don't understand, and are reluctant to accept the ones who are 'different'.

This makes you feel that Alanna and Ian are honestly fortunate to have found one another, making for a believable and charming love story.
So this one is a little over the top in the magic department. A WELL FAVORED GENTLEMAN is written in the vein of an old fashioned fairy tale. Keeping that in mind, plus the fact that 200 years ago, most of humanity was superstitous, it's a good book.
Handsome and tortured Ian Fairchild, has come to his dying, but ungrateful father's side to give what comfort he can. He also wants to inherit the estate his father is overseeing. Ian's only obstacle is Lady Alanna MacLeod, the rightful owner of the property.
Lovely Alanna is hiding out and disguising herself as the town witch until her 21st birthday, when she can legally claim her estate, but Ian discovers her secret, and sets out to make her his, thus also making her estate his. Somewhere along the line, these two people begin to mean more to each other than even the land. And the time comes to make a choice.
A WELL FAVORED GENTLEMAN is complicated by Ian's unbelievably offensive father, Alanna's greedy cousins, and the mytical sea creatures, the selkies.
This is a good book, but it is not to be taken seriously. I liked it. Really different kind of adult romance.
I love regencies with some fantasy woven in, especially if they include some pretty hot love scenes. A warning if forced seduction is an issue for you, you'll want to pass on this one. While I wouldn't tolerate the hero's behavior in a contemporary romance, it worked for me in this setting. Both Ian (dark and brooding) and Alanna (proud and independent), as well as the other important characters, were nicely drawn (I especially enjoyed Wilda). The plot moved along well with a couple of surprises. The use of magic enriched the story, as did the Scottish coast setting. There were a couple of instances of anachronistic dialog, but they didn't detract from the overall story for me. I don't feel it was necessary to read the previous book, A WELL-PLEASURED LADY, in order to enjoy this one (although you would have more background on Ian and his family).
