Goodreads Description- In this thrilling gothic suspense debut by Sara Foster in the tradition of Rosamund Lupton and Sophie Hannah, a young mother searches Yorkshire's windswept moors for the truth behind her husband's mysterious disappearance.THE ANSWERS ARE HIDING BENEATH THE SHADOWS
When Grace’s husband, Adam, inherits an isolated North Yorkshire cottage, they leave the bustle of London behind to try a new life. A week later, Adam vanishes without a trace, leaving their baby daughter, Millie, in her stroller on the doorstep. The following year, Grace returns to the tiny village on the untamed heath. Everyone—the police, her parents, even her best friend and younger sister—is convinced that Adam left her. But Grace, unable to let go of her memories of their love and life together, cannot accept this explanation. She is desperate for answers, but the slumbering, deeply superstitious hamlet is unwilling to give up its secrets. As Grace hunts through forgotten corners of the cottage searching for clues, and digs deeper into the lives of the locals, strange dreams begin to haunt her. Are the villagers hiding something, or is she becoming increasingly paranoid? Only as snowfall threatens to cut her and Millie off from the rest of the world does Grace make a terrible discovery. She has been looking in the wrong place for answers all along, and she and her daughter will be in terrible danger if she cannot get them away in time.
I checked this book out of the library based mainly on the cover alone and then realized when I got home that I also had it on my Kindle. So my mind must have registered somehow that this was going to be a good book. Well my brain was right. This was a fantastic book by debut author Sara Foster. It is set in the psychologically cold Yorkshire Moors, in the remote village of Roseby where there are only a few cottages and a grand house on the hill owned by the Blankley family. A year ago Grace and Adam, a new and happily married couple, move to Adam's grandparent's cottage with their newborn daughter Millie to get away from the rat race of London. After only a week, Adam goes missing leaving baby Millie in her stroller on the porch of the cottage. When the police find no leads and the search is called off, Grace moves back to her parents home in France, but Grace cannot leave things undone. She has to go back to at least search the cottage to see if Adam had left any clues as to what he had been up to in his last days.
Upon Grace's return she befriends Ben, a quiet man who lives down the lane who offers to help her update the cottage for possible rental or sale. During his inspection, they discover that the cottage has a cellar that Adam had lied about telling Grace that it was a closet that he didn't have a key. Once Ben opens the lock, Grace finds boxes that Adam had brought with him from London which opens up new leads to his disappearance. Also along the way, Grace befriends Meredith Blankley and her daughters who with their strange behaviors and their stories of ghosts on the Moors, start making Grace increasingly paranoid.
Grace becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to her husband. She finds that she cannot sleep at night and strange things start happening around her. Are these strange events products of her overactive, obsessed imagination or is someone trying to drive Grace away before she finds out what really happened to Adam. Did Adam walk away from their marriage or did something horrible happen to him. Due to all of Grace's experiences she believes someone in the village knows what happened to Adam. Can she find out what before she is driven mad?
This is a intensely written psychological thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat! Each time I thought one character was a suspect the author threw in more information that changed my mind and had me suspecting another. I was surprised that this book was written by a first time author. Her writing is strong. She keeps to the plotline and doesn't stray into unnecessary territory. Her character's are well developed and she did an excellent job creating such an intense psychologically thrilling environment using setting, characters, and tone. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who likes British mysteries especially with the current Kindle price of 1.99. Just as the description says, her writing reminds me of Sophie Hannah, Ruth Rendell, or Daphne Du Muir. Those are some big names to stand with, especially with a debut novel. Bravo to Sara Foster! I will definitely be looking for her next work! 5 stars!

let me start off by saying I did enjoy this book, very much in fact, it was well written and kept my interest from start to finish. BUT, this is NOT a horror story - not by any means does it even go there! I don't know why its called that when it is just a good contemporary mystery. For a good horror there is no one like St Simone - try her books, she is great (her first 2 books gave me chills!) - I will, however, read other books by this author because I like her style
The first page grabs you with "They should be home by now".
Grace cannot imagine where her husband & two week old baby could be. They did not take the car, it's out front. She had gone shopping. Came home to their empty cottage. She finds Adam's note it unsettled her. "Won't be long. I have to talk to you when I get back. Don't go anywhere.Ax." But they are not back, it's dark now. the phone rings, Adam?
I was hooked, where is her young baby, her husband. This story is well written, you can see the moors, the Cabin, all of the characters. Strange neighbors, someone watching always. The ghosts stories, strange noises such a full picture is painted for its readers.
You can not put this book down, from the first page to the very end. Loved it. Highly recommend this book. I truly hope there are many more books to follow. A great read!

This book satisfied my need for a fast paced mystery to keep me guessing and just have fun with. There are no really extreme or extra clever plot twists or anything super remarkable about the story which keeps me from giving it a 5, but still, I very much enjoyed reading it. I guessed one plot development but not the important who-dunnit part. There was a list of possible suspects who surround the main character which I think makes for the most fun. I liked the sister very much though I found the main character to be rather bland. Was not sure why everyone fell in love with her when she seemed pretty dull. That said, she didn't really annoy me either and there were enough other interesting characters. Stayed up late reading this to find out the answer to the mystery. The setting is traditional in the best way possible and I liked the tip of the hat to a few of the gothic classics. There is more focus on the mystery and creating a certain mood and relationships than there is on "action" in this one (such as one sometimes finds in thrillers and which involves freeing oneself from ropes, car chases, etc). That actually suits me becuase I always find the action parts of the book to be the most boring. I like the uneasy atmosphere and mystery bits much more, of which this book has plenty.
Grace Lockwood and her husband Adam and their new baby daughter Millie have moved into a cottage in North Yorkshire left to Adam by his grandparents. However, while they are still settling in Grace returns from shopping to find Adam missing and baby Millie left on her pram on the doorstep. Despite a frantic search organized by the village and local police Adam is never found. Twelve months later after spending the year with her parents in France, Grace returns to the village just before Christmas to tidy up affairs and decide what to do with the cottage. She still can’t believe that Adam is not coming back and starts to ask questions and follow up on what he was doing in his last days. Strange things start happening and the villagers tales of ghosts on the moors start to spook her and as the weather closes in she becomes tense and fearful.
This novel has a sinister, gothic feel to it with the isolation of the Yorkshire moors, the insularity of the villagers and the heavy snowfalls that make it difficult to leave. Just as Grace is preparing to flee from the cottage, events of the past start to catch up with the present and Grace begins to unravel the truth behind Adam’s disappearance.
